Christ Church CE Primary School

'Let your light shine' Matthew 5:16

PE

Statement of Intent:

At Christ Church, our intent is to provide a PE curriculum that pupils from

Reception to Year 6 enjoy and allow them to experience a range of different

activities and where all children are given an opportunity to shine.

It is our wish that this will help them to develop their health, fitness and mental

wellbeing. We intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that

inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other

physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become

physically confident in a way, which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to

compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed the school games values of; determination, honesty, passion, respect, self-belief and teamwork.

Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in a wide range of competitive sport. Where possible we will nurture any talent and signpost to relevant areas in the community to pursue their talent further.

It is our aim at Christ Church Primary School to develop and encourage:

  • competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • are physically active for sustained periods of time

  • engage in competitive sports and activities

  • lead healthy, active lives

Implementation:

Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being. We also provide outdoor and adventurous activities that aim to encourage children to face fears, take risks and build a love for the outdoors.

Impact:

Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Christ Church, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.
