History

What is History?

Our 3 key questions:

What are the key events?

What did people say and why?

How does it change our future?

Statement of Intent:

At Christ Church, we aim for a high quality history curriculum which should

inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the Britain’s past and that

of the wider world.

Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about the history of Britain and

how it has influenced and been influenced by the wider world, recognising the

impact of history on our world today.

Children will know and understand about significant aspects of the history of the wider world like ancient civilisations and empires; changes in living memory and beyond living memory; learn about the lives of significant people of the past; understand the methods of historical enquiry and be able to ask and answer questions. We want children to enjoy and love learning about history by gaining this knowledge and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits.

We aim to:

  • To promote curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world.
  • To consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like and the politics involved.
  • To consider how beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions.
  • To develop their knowledge of significant events and people.
  • To introduce pupils to historical enquiry through studying evidence, asking questions and problem-solving.
  • To enrich and support other areas of the curriculum.

Implementation:

Through our History Curriculum, we aim to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about Britain’s past and that of the wider world.  In each year group, children will study units of history across the school year. Often this unit will form the basis of that term’s topic enabling the children to fully immerse in their history learning. In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in history, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school for the development of history knowledge and skills. For younger children in Early Years and Key Stage 1, this incorporates changes in living memory, and learning about the lives of significant people and events of the past. In Key Stage 2, the focus broadens out to Britain’s early history, how it has influenced and been influenced by the wider world, in addition to understanding the significant aspects of the history of the wider world through ancient civilisations and empires.

All learning will start by revisiting prior knowledge. This will be scaffolded to support children to recall previous learning and make connections. Staff will model explicitly the subject-specific vocabulary, knowledge and skills relevant to the learning to allow them to integrate new knowledge into larger concepts.

Learning will be supported through the use of knowledge organisers that provide children with scaffolding that supports them to retain new facts and vocabulary in their long term memory.Think like and Historian vocabulary sheets are used to inform teacher planning in KS2 so that Historical skills language is embedded into what we teach. In KS1 the Think like an Historian vocabulary forms the basis of the key Language needed to be understood. They are displayed in classrooms during History Themed work. Knowledge organisers are used for pre-teaching, to support home learning and also as a part of daily review.

Weekly curriculum quizzes are used to review learning and check that children know more and remember more. Our historians will be given a variety of experiences both in and out of the classroom where appropriate to create memorable learning opportunities and to further support and develop their understanding.

Impact:

When we ask our children at Christ Church, pupil voice shows that pupils are confident and able to talk about what they have learnt in history using subject specific vocabulary. Pupil voice also demonstrates that pupils enjoy history and are able to recall their learning over time. Pupils work demonstrates that history is taught at an age appropriate standard across each year group with opportunities planned in for pupils working at greater depth. Work is of good quality and demonstrates pupils are acquiring knowledge, skills and vocabulary in an appropriate sequence.

At Christ Church we have an ambitious Curriculum where we teach to the top and scaffold the learning along the way so everyone can excel at what they do!
